just the highlights

The first time I wrote fiction, I was in second grade.
It was an assignment for class. A creative writing mission. I don’t remember the rubric or the exact goal, we were probably being graded on story structure or syntax or spelling or whatever it is that second graders learn.
I do remember the paper. It had a big window to draw a picture and lines to hold our stories — in cursive of course. I remember running out of space, having to squeeze my words in the margins of the paper.

Dungeons and Dragons has had a resurgence in recent years thanks to actual play shows like Dimension 20, Critical Role, Dungeons and Daddies… the list goes on and on. Suddenly, what was always a nerdy hobby has become a source of attention.

But what makes these shows so successful?

They all have an excellent story.

Picture this. You’re sitting in a movie theater. Hand deep and buttery in a bucket of popcorn. Soda fizzling in your mouth. The orchestra swells as you watch a young boy learn how to ride a dragon. And it’s… 2025?
Deja Vu, right? Because what you’re watching (or probably watching) is a scene for scene remake of a movie you’ve seen before; How to Train Your Dragon, which will have a live-action remake premiering in June 2025.
